Editor s note: This month, The Sun dives into some of Gainesville s underrepresented Black community leaders and their work. Pamela Davis is the fourth and final story in this series.
Pamela Davis grew up in Savannah, Georgia, with her mother, Martha Mike, and nine siblings. All but the two eldest moved together into public housing when Davis hit seventh grade.
Though they did not have much, her mother taught them to share what they could with friends and the community, Davis said. And after school, she would hang out at the YMCA at the back of her neighborhood and soak up inspiration from the female director as she worked.
