The Big Dry in certain parts of the country continues to have an impact on the price and sale of store stock. Independent Whanganui stock agent, livestock commentator, farmer, rural real estate agent and Horizons regional councilor David Cotton said the continuing dry spell in Hawkes Bay, northern parts of Wairarapa near Masterton and several areas of the South Island were having a major impact.

The many layers of sediment laid down in the Whanganui Basin record three to four million years of geological history, attracting fossickers and fossil hunters alike, Emeritus scientist Dr Hamish Campbell tells Laurel Stowell. Dr Hamish Campbell is speaking to a group of about 30 who are looking west from the top of Whanganui s Durie Hill. I hope you like that you are sitting on top of a pile of very young sediments, he says.
It s a field trip organised by Whanganui Regional Museum and Campbell s talk the previous night drew 153 to the museum lecture theatre.

A road trip to explore the far North. We were living in Waiouru at the time and decided that we should spend more time exploring our own backyard. Over a 10 day period, we explored Matakana, Mangawhai, Waipū, Ruakākā, Russell, Paihia, Kaeo, Kaitāia, Ahipara, Dargaville and Maungatūroto. We did all the touristy things including local tours by local guides. I think these were the best part of the trip. Locals, in all their Kiwiana glory, proudly marketing their area.
