Simply put, “Up North just means summer vacation time” in Michigan, said reader Chris Jones of Rockford.
“No matter where ‘Up North’ is to you, it’s where you want to be in the summer,” said Jones, a father of two who is the controller at Rockford Package Supply. “It’s where you want to be in the summer..We all love going Up North!”

COPPER HARBOR, MICH. The historic Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Michigan’s remote Keweenaw Peninsula is pursuing being named an International Dark Sky Park.
Coordinators at the lodge began the rigorous application process a few months ago. Approval could happen as early as this summer, making the lodge and its 177-acre property the first International Dark Sky Park in the Upper Peninsula.

LANSING Why is a game warden from the western Upper Peninsula traipsing through the wilds of Siberia and Northern Russia during World War I?
Because he’s on a secret mission to rescue Tsar Nicholas II, the ill-fated “Emperor of All the Russias,” and his equally doomed family.
Perhaps more importantly, who would send a Michigan game warden who speaks no Russian into the chaos of the Russian Civil War?
In a Michigan writer’s new novel, it’s former President Teddy Roosevelt who dispatches game warden Lute Bapcat on the dangerous assignment – at the behest of future British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Houghton took number 9 in the top ten list of the most charming towns in the country. It’s a northern journey for Michiganders and quite a stretch for folks out of state. In other words, it’s in the Keweenaw Peninsula and you have to travel pretty far up into the U.P. to find it.
Houghton made the list of “The 23 Most Charming Towns in America” recently. The list was compiled by Tempo 24/7, the lifestyle magazine branch of 24/7 Wall St
. Tempo 24/7 took a look at towns across the country, and then looked for those that had a little bit more uniqueness and charm to offer. And Houghton made the cut.
And . . . we’re back. With a whole new Photos of the Week for your enjoyment (we hope!). Today’s Featured Image was brought to you by @RockyDS, who shot this pic of the Salmon Glacier in northern British Columbia, Canada’s most relaxed province.
I took this photo in 2018 on the way back to Alberta after a trip to Telegraph Creek, B.C.
The road RockyDS and his 2017 Honda CRF 250 Rally were on goes from B.C. through Hyder, Alaska, and back into B.C. This was a side trip on his way down the Stewart Cassiar Highway from Dease Lake. He shot the picture with a Nikon Coolpix at f/4.1 and 1/1250 a high shutter speed because, you know, those Canadian glaciers really move. But seriously, RockyDS’s image gets the best of our love this week because the gathering of pixels sent in by you (thank you!) seems especially drawn to those loud, empty places, and we think this image articulates that idea very well.
