According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year in the United States, approximately 700 people die during pregnancy or in the year after. Another 50,000 women each year experience severe pregnancy complications. Black women are far more likely than White women to experience death during childbirth or severe pregnancy complications. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions and implicit bias.

After semi-successfully finishing our basement ceiling with the term “semi” relating to the fact the plumbing and mechanical ductwork were modified in order to satisfy 98 per cent of society, unfortunately leaving those individuals above 76 inches in height with the choice of either declining entry to our new basement space, or equipping themselves with protective headgear, thoughtfully provided by ourselves at the bottom of the stairs we’re moving on to the walls.
If headroom wasn’t an issue, and if the original builders of this home would have taken a moment to review the basement plan with the engineer, instead of forfeiting his insight and sending the only person with a post-secondary education off on a Tims run, we’d be looking at the floor next.
