Emma Christie is unbelievably chuffed. And no wonder. Her very first novel has been longlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association New Blood Dagger Award 2021. “It’s on my list of writing dreams!” says Emma, 40. “It’s such a well-respected prize and previous winners include Gillian Flynn, who wrote Gone Girl. “If I make the shortlist – announced on May 20 – I’ll be absolutely delighted but if not I still feel amazed. It s all from the heart : Ardnish trilogy author Angus MacDonald

Angus MacDonald’s Ardnish was Home is a stunning yet tragic tale, writes Gayle Ritchie. When you’re lucky enough to have a writing spot overlooking the breathtakingly beautiful Ardnish peninsula, inspiration comes easily. “It’s the most picturesque spot in the world,” says businessman-turned-author Angus MacDonald. “The main village, Peanmeanach, is a beautiful crescent of houses overlooking a sandy beach. “The glistening sea, the golden sands and the aquamarine sea, when the weather is nice, with the big mountains in front of you – I’m overcome by the beauty of it.” © Ian MacLeod Peanmeanach. Born and bred in the West Highlands, Angus started writing aged 50 although having left school at 16, he claims he’s “not really sure” how he’s “meant to write”, although it doesn’t show.

Hillgoers founder Garry Cormack shows Gayle how to navigate on a trip exploring Bennachie. Learning basic navigation skills is a great way to reduce risk and boost your confidence in the hills, as Gayle discovers. Anyone heading into the hills needs to have their wits about them. Sure, you might set out in glorious sunshine, with a fair idea of where you’re going, “safe” in the knowledge you’re got a navigation app on your fully-charged mobile. But the weather in Scotland can change in the blink of an eye – one minute it might be sunny and warm and the next it’s snowing – and phone batteries run out and signal can be lost.
