CHARLESTON U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., praised President Joe Biden Friday for restoring some “calmness” during his first joint address to Congress Wednesday, but said Biden’s proposals need to be fully vetted through the legislative process.
Manchin spoke with the West Virginia press Friday morning from his office on Capitol Hill. The senior West Virginia senator was among the 200 members of Congress out of 535 permitted to attend Biden’s address due to COVID-19 social distance regulations.
“It was a good speech. I thought it was a well-delivered speech,” Manchin said. “It hit on so many topics and so many issues, but basically it had some calmness to it and some normality to it. And I think that’s what the American public wants.”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) The U.S. Senate confirmed Gayle Manchin, an educator and former West Virginia official married to Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, to be the co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Biden nominated Manchin to the post in the federal-state partnership that promotes economic development across West Virginia and parts of 12 other states in Appalachia.
“I am pleased the Senate has confirmed my wife, Gayle Manchin, to lead the Appalachian Regional Commission,” Sen. Manchin said in a statement Thursday. “ARC is a vital partner to all those working and living in Appalachia, and I know that Gayle will bring the experience and skills necessary to successfully lead the commission as it serves the region.”
Manchin s comments, made during a radio interview with West Virginia MetroNews s Hoppy Kercheval, underscore how some of Democrats biggest priorities face headaches even if they got rid of the 60-vote legislative filibuster something they don t currently have the support to do.
Manchin, asked about a bill to grant D.C. statehood, said the idea had been studied by previous Justice Departments.
ADVERTISEMENT They all came to the same conclusion: If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment . and let the people of America vote, Manchin said.
Pressed if he would oppose a stand-alone bill, Manchin added Yes, I would.
