I ve been in Kalamazoo since September but I m still learning new things about the area every day.
For example: The fact that the Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership offers something called Downtown Dollars . Now, I remember during the holidays a promotion was offered to encourage shopping in the downtown area where shoppers could double their holiday dollars with these Downtown Dollars.
Silly me thinking that was a one time thing.
Downtown Dollars are, in fact, available throughout the year. You can purchase them online at either $5, $10 or $20 amounts. They re valid for 5 years from date of purchase.

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials with the Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership (KDP) announced Tuesday that the Downtown Kalamazoo Program launched on Monday.
Officials say the purpose of the program is to clean downtown’s public spaces and serve as a resource for visitors downtown.
“We are excited to launch this program in downtown Kalamazoo. In numerous successful downtowns and business districts across the country and around the globe, we see how ambassador programs are providing critical cleaning, sanitization, and public space maintenance in response to the pandemic,” KDP President Andrew Haan said in a statement. “A clean, safe, and welcoming downtown will continue to be vital to our success as we move beyond the pandemic and continue our work of ensuring downtown is the thriving, active heart of our community.â

Currently, the ambassador team is made up of 5 people that will be working 7 days a week. All are trained on safety protocols involving Covid-19 and social distancing. They ll start their day at 7a.m. and may be available as late as 11:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. You ll spot them on foot, on bikes and in a designated vehicle and should be able to pick them out thanks to their bright blue and grey uniforms.
The program officially launched this past Monday, 5/17, with a two week goal of cleaning up graffiti, removing leaves and power washing areas that need it most. Downtown businesses can also request ambassador services by calling 269-568-5402 or emailing ambassadors@downtownkalamazoo.org.
