Political opponents unite in defeat

Political opponents unite in defeat Voters take down two fighters on Madison city council Expand Incumbent Alds. Rebecca Kemble and Paul Skidmore both lost to challengers in the April 6 election. The city council’s staunchest backer of the police was defeated in the April 6 election. So was one of the city’s most progressive reformers.  Political newcomer Nikki Conklin ousted 10-term incumbent Paul Skidmore with 56 percent of the vote in a contentious and expensive race on the city’s far west side. Skidmore was strongly backed by the Madison police union which in a February press release called him “the undisputed leader” on the council for “working to meet the needs of public safety in Madison.” Skidmore leaned hard into a pro-police message in his campaign literature; one piece features a quote from former Madison police Chief Mike Koval — “Defunding the Police Plans are putting you and me in danger” — and a photo of a

The men s shelter dilemma - Isthmus | Madison, Wisconsin

The men’s shelter dilemma Former Fleet Services Building for city of Madison The city s former fleet services building now serves as a temporary men s shelter. The site is slated to serve the future public market. Let’s start out by giving Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and County Executive Joe Parisi some well-deserved credit. The relationship between the city and county has always been a contentious one, and yet they came together and worked out a deal to cost share on a new homeless shelter for single men at the vacant Gander Mountain store at East Towne.  That was a good deed. Now it must be punished.

Madison Common Council kicks can down the road on new homeless shelter

Madison Common Council kicks can down the road on new homeless shelter In a 16-1 vote, Madison’s common council punted a decision on a new, east side homeless shelter to May fourth. The property, located on Zeier Road near the East Towne Mall, will cost the city an estimated $2.6 million, plus an additional $400,000 for related acquisition costs. The council’s decision came around 2:00 AM, after hours of emotional public input and tense exchanges notably between Alder Samba Baldeh and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. Baldeh, who represents the district the proposed shelter will be located in, was the only alder to vote against rescheduling. By the council’s May 4th meeting, he will have ended his term on the council.
