The Ministry for Primary Industries today told the Herald that after taking advice from the Crown Solicitor, it will not pursue prosecution after the broiler farm deaths.
An animal law expert said the decision was disappointing, and sent a signal that authorities would capitulate on prosecuting tough cases in the poultry sector.
The animals died at D B Chicks near Helensville in late November 2019.

An unprotected fish species at the centre of claims a legal loophole is allowing overfishing is now the subject of a rāhui until lawmakers make changes to protect it.
The rāhui (embargo) on fishing for pink maomao, also known as longfin perch, was announced by Ngāti Hei kaumātua Joe Davis Friday.
It applies to the waters of the iwi s rohe (boundaries) along the eastern Coromandel Peninsula between Whangapoua and Whangamatā.
