CANTON Murder charges against a Richville man have been dropped, according to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua.
John Anson, 30, had been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the May 4 death of Justin Massey, 40.
“At the time on Tuesday evening (May 4), we believed those charges were appropriate based on the information we had. Based on further investigation and a review of physical evidence, it became apparent those charges weren’t appropriate for Mr. Anson any longer,” Pasqua said.
He still faces a second-degree assault felony charge and is released under probationary supervision.
The incident was caught on video, which is circulating among social media channels.
In the 20-second video, officer Brandon Huckle is seen entering a garage on March 16 and, when he opens the door, it strikes a vehicle inside the garage. Heâs then seen flinging the door into the car two more times and then looking at the damage before walking away.
Attorney Brian P. Barrett posted the video to Facebook on Wednesday, stating, âA Massena cop did this to my clientâs car when they were executing a search warrant at his house on March 16, 2021.â
He does not name the client, but the post is a follow-up to an earlier posting by Bert Haverstock, who wrote, âSo should Massena,Village PD keep him? Damaging a citizenâs vehicle, thereâs a $2,000 discrepancy in seized property! Hmmm!â
