Almost half a million Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), with New York state among the highest areas of infection in the country. Drilling in even further, the Hudson Valley is considered an epicenter for infections locally and around the world. Dr. Richard S. Ostfeld studies the ecology of Lyme and other tick-born diseases at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook. The CDC announced this winter that it has been underreporting cases of Lyme, but for Ostfeld, the most worrisome issue is the fact that we still cannot accurately quantify the magnitude of the problem. “If we underestimate the nature of the threat, then we re not going to apply adequate resources to either understanding it or solving it.
