As the NHL saying goes, it s not a playoff series until somebody wins on the road. If that s the case, then the Wild and Vegas Golden Knights certainly have themselves a playoff series.
With its 1-0 overtime victory in Game 1 on Sunday in Las Vegas, the Wild showed that its 5-1-2 record against the Golden Knights in the regular season wasn t a product of smoke and mirrors. Behind Cam Talbot s 42 saves and a patient, structured game that showed no panic when under pressure, coach Dean Evason s squad weathered a stormy first period and hung around long enough for Joel Eriksson Ek to finally solve Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury 3:20 into overtime.

Wild goalie Cam Talbot got the better of Marc-Andre Fleury in Game 1, but the Golden Knights netminder was still excellent in the 1-0 loss, stopping 29 of 30 shots after an excellent regular season.

The Minnesota Wild upset the Vegas Golden Knights in a 1-0 overtime thriller on Sunday and will try to repeat that success in Game 2 of their best-of-seven series on Tuesday night.
The Knights entered the postseason with NHL betting odds of -266 to win their first-round matchup with the Wild but after losing in Game 1 have seen their series odds shrink to -115.
That message resonates with Smith s teammate Alex Chiasson. The one thing I love about Smitty is his attitude every day, the Oilers forward said. He has one mindset and he wants to win. He brings a lot of energy to our group. He just loves the game. It s a good reminder for ourselves and for myself personally not to take any day at the rink for granted. You want to appreciate playing in the NHL. He s the best example of that.
Smith s 21-6-2 record, a goals-against average of 2.31 and a save percentage of .923 this season makes the six-foot-five goalie from Kingston, Ont., the Game 1 starter for Edmonton again.
