Detective Luca Benedetti was shot and killed Monday while serving a search warrant to an apartment on Camellia Court in San Luis Obispo. “Yesterday I had to share the most difficult news I’ve ever had to deliver,” said Derek Johnson, San Luis Obispo City Manager at a press conference. “That our community lost one of the dedicated servants while doing his job and keeping the community safe.” Another officer, Detective Steve Orozco, was injured during the incident and was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital where he was released Monday evening.

Police said the shooting occurred at an apartment on Camellia Court, off Margarita Avenue near South Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo around 5:20 p.m. The police department said they were serving the warrant when two officers were shot. The shooter was reportedly shot and killed at the scene. One officer has died and the second was transported to an area hospital and is listed as being in stable condition.
