A heavily tattooed man with death before dishonour marked on his stomach and his friend who sparked a pub brawl during a birthday party which left a man unconscious were offended after overhearing a joke about neck ink.
Cameron Fox, 24, and Brayden Downie, 24, repeatedly slapped and punched the victim at the Delaney Hotel on Darby St, Cooks Hill in Newcastle at about 7.30pm on June 13, 2020.
The victim was with family and friends when someone made a comment in jest about neck tattoos, court documents revealed.
Fox, who has roses tattooed on his neck, and snakes, skulls and a gun on his body, and Downie had been drinking at a nearby table and overheard the joke.

ASX-listed retailer Shaver Shop is hoping a widespread return to the office will help maintain its soaring profit and sales figures as workers swap their unruly lockdown beards for a more professional trim.
The company told investors on Monday it expects its half-yearly profits to soar between 75 and 85 per cent thanks to a boom in online sales and a continued trend towards at-home grooming spurred by months of COVID-19 lockdowns.
Shaver Shop chief executive Cameron Fox is predicting a return of the clean shaven man as workers head back into the office.
