Li l Friday Roundup: 8 events to do in the Cape Fear this weekend

Thursday, Apr. 1 Cameron Art Museum, 3201 S. 17th St. • Free with museum admission Cameron Art Museum is displaying 100 new works from North Carolina artist Robert Johnson. Surreal land- and waterscapes showcase 41 N.C. state parks, and the differences in flora, fauna, and all the creatures inhabiting the areas.  Johnson spent a year traveling and sketching in the wild, capturing the mood of the environments. (Port City Daily interviewed the artist in February, which can be read here). As it turns out, the artist — whose love for the western part of the state is well-documented — said one of his favorite stops was at Carolina Beach State Park.

Southern Living magazine Tuesday named Wilmington on its annual list of 10 best Southern cities on the rise, citing the Port City s perfect marriage of quiet coastal hamlet and bustling city, with easy beach access as well as downtown charm. The 10 cities, which were listed in alphabetical orders, include Baton Rouge; Greenville, S.C.; Huntsville, Alabama; Norfolk; Tulsa; Waco, Texas; and Winston-Salem. What does it mean to be city on the rise ? Well, the magazine defines it as lacking the headaches that often come with big cities but with perhaps more activities than most small towns in order to fill a weekend or a day trip.

Metalscapes: Artist Sarah Sheffield talks copper, flame-torching and her new show at Bellamy

‘Bog Beauty’ by Sarah Sheffield features colored pencil on copper and is hanging at Bellamy Mansion through Mar. 20. (Port City Daily/Courtesy of artist) WILMINGTON  Sarah Sheffield’s journey as a fine artist seems pre-destined: Her mother was an art teacher and her father, an industrial designer and engineer. Her grandfather was an architect and her uncle, a designer. “So I grew up around it,” Sheffield said. “Foolish me went off into social services and soon knew it was a totally wrong field for me.” After heading back to grad school, she immersed herself into arts administration and worked in Raleigh before becoming the arts program supervisor for the Town of Cary. Sheffield would help plan the city’s arts programs, oversee two facilities and generally educate the public on art.
