Gator blues have inaded the bays, but weakfish and porgies are the talk of the town.

Weakfish and porgies are the talk of the town. Gator blues have invaded most bays around Long Island. Huge stripers being caught to the west. Schoolies all around the island. Most areas saw an influx of slot-sized fish this week. The squid run occurring is worthy of mention.
Long Island Fishing Report
Brooklyn just got a fresh report from Rockfish Charters in Brooklyn that some huge stripers were being boated today. Those guys are using live bunker, and putting a hurting on the huge bass moving through. Frank heard some very good fluke reports from opening day. Party boats are catching keepers. It’s not hand-over-fist but there is some solid fishing to be had. Every angler is reporting at least one or two keepers. The general population is around the Verrazano to Gravesend. There have been some big bluefish reported in the Raritan, and aro

It is slim pickings on the fishing front. There are a handful of boats heading offshore to productive cod grounds. The seas have been volatile this past month though, so most of those party boats are often forced to cancel their plans to sail. There were some solid boat reports when the weather did permit an outing.
This cod was caught on the the February 13th trip aboard the Laura Lee.
Back on land, most water bodies have been frozen for the past few weeks. A number of anglers have been getting out onto the ice and hammering away at an array of sweet water species.
Long Island – New York Fishing Update – January 2021
Wreck fishing, white perch, and freshwater fish are keeping anglers in the game during this traditionally slow part of the fishing season.
Long Island Fishing Report
It has been cold at night and temperatures have been dropping low enough to leave a thin sheet of ice across most bodies of water by morning. Running water is the primary option available to Long Island anglers.
I had a real tough time finding some with hungry fish these past two weeks. I started off on a high note just after New Years Day, before the waters froze. Holdover stripers were hungry, as were freshwater species like largemouth bass and crappie. It is winter fishing, so it is not easy or fast, but it is time well spent outdoors.

As the surf becomes barren, and boats are stored away for the winter, party/charter boats remain one of the only viable options for saltwater fishing. Luckily, the fishing this past week on those boats was outstanding. With cooler temps settling in, bigger cod (to 30 pounds) and double digit blackfish have been chewing well out in Montauk. Other bottom species such as pollock, jumbo sea bass, weakfish and big porgies are the main fish making it to the dinner table.
Land lubbers have just a few options, mainly in the fresh and brackish water. White perch have been biting all around the island, with some schools absolutely ravenous. 100 fish days can be easily attained. I’ve seen a few guys get their first perch this past week, and become addicted. Holdover striped bass can be found in many of the white perch waters, and they are (to my knowledge) the only stripers currently feeding on the eastern half of the island. I get a strong feeling that the last of the str
