Pre-arrest bail of Capt Safdar extended over assets probe - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: A Peshawar High Court bench on Wednesday extended till February 9 the interim pre-arrest bail earlier granted to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader retired Captain Mohammad Safdar in an ongoing inquiry against him by National Accountability Bureau regarding his assets. The bench of Justice Lal Jan Khattak and Justice Ijaz Anwar directed Mr Safdar to cooperate with the investigation team and appear before it whenever required. The bench was hearing a pre-arrest bail petition filed by Mr Safdar stating that the inquiry against him was initiated under political consideration. In October last year, the court had granted interim bail to him on condition of furnishing two sureties of Rs500,000 each.

ISLAMABAD: National Assem­bly Speaker Asad Qaiser on Thursday accepted the plea of two Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) legislators that their resignations received by the assembly secretariat were “fake”. Through a ruling, the speaker declared that MNAs Murtaza Javed Abbasi from Abbottabad and Mohammad Sajjad from Mansehra “have disowned their resignations received by the National Assembly Secretariat on Dec 14, 2020, and also called the resignations fake, thus no further action is required on them”. The ruling from the speaker came a day after Mr Abbasi and Mr Sajjad personally appeared before him after receiving letters from the NA Secretariat asking them to do so for “verification of their resignations”.

Safdar s arrest, leave applications and an army probe While cases against opposition politicians have riled up their leadership, it was the arrest of PML-N leader retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, who is also the husband of Maryam Nawaz, in Karachi that became a tipping point. In October, Safdar was arrested for by police from the hotel he was staying in a day after a massive PDM public gathering was held in Karachi, which was addressed by PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz among other leaders. Hours before the gathering, Safdar and Maryam along with their supporters visited Jinnah s mausoleum where the former raised political slogans. The act was criticised by PTI supporters as well as some government officials, who deemed it as disrespectful. It was because of this that a case was registered against Safdar which later resulted in his arrest from the hotel a day later.
