Britain s Eurovision Song Contest entries: where are they now?

1970: Mary Hopkin, ‘Knock, Knock, Who’s There?’ Welsh folk singer Hopkin gave the UK another second place at Eurovision, after a string of hit singles including Goodbye (written and produced by Paul McCartney). After she married top producer Tony Visconti in 1971, she withdrew from the limelight, but still sang on several albums he produced, including David Bowie’s Low. After a late-Seventies comeback, she joined a group called Oasis (not the Gallaghers’ band), and sang on Vangelis’s soundtrack for Blade Runner. She is still recording, and released her last studio album in 2013. In 2018, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her break out single Those Were the Days, produced by Paul McCartney, Hopkin released a new acoustic version of the track.

The organisation is encouraging residents to nominate people who have used innovative fundraising methods and put personal effort in to support good causes in the city. Carmel Walsh, partner at Pryers, said: “Pryers have a long history of supporting the Community Pride Awards because we recognise how important it is to shine a light on the incredible feats that ordinary people in our local community are performing.

Peter Murray eyes 1,000-mile walk around Barnet and Enfield

An 86-year-old man has said he has “plenty of years left on the clock” as he eyes a 1,000-mile walking challenge covering Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. Peter Murray will tackle the march in aid of North London Hospice after being inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s fundraising for the NHS. “I love walking,” said the 86-year-old. “It gets me out and I meet lots of lovely people and fill them in on what I’m doing it for. “I adopt a Legionaire’s slow marching walk, which conserves energy. “Even though I tend to push my wife’s trolley or a wheelchair to give me a bit more stability I can still cover up to 30 miles a day.”
