On a January afternoon, I wavered at the thought of visiting Mill Pond Garden, an outdoor garden recommended by a friend. But when I toured the property of the homeowner and creator Michael Zajic, my mind simply marveled at the beauteous landscape of shrubs and trees, and yes, flowering plants, around me.
“Nature is our greatest teacher and greatest joy. Public gardens are like plant and happiness schools; we need them now more than ever,” explained Zajic, who has devoted his entire career to designing gardens to share with the public.

February is I Love to Read Month, and supporters of Read Aloud Delaware and children’s literacy are lending their voices to the celebration.
Guest readers will read children’s stories live on the Read Aloud Delaware Facebook page at specific times on selected dates throughout the month.
Sussex County Council President Michael Vincent will read at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, and again at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 26. Both readings will be of English-language books.
Stacy Kotch-Jester, third-grade teacher at Shields Elementary School, will be the guest reader at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18.
Local young author Maximo Castellano will read in both English and Spanish at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24. The 12-year-old from Georgetown has written, translated and illustrated 14 books for children.
