Tropical Cyclone Niran has intensified into a category 3 as it moves off the far north Queensland coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Livio Regano said the cyclone had moved 345 kilometres north-east of Cairns early Thursday.

“It has finally started to move away from the coast in a south-easterly direction overnight but once it really starts moving on it should race off pretty quickly in the next day or two,” he said.
