Woman and teen girl killed in Cape Town shack fire

A woman and teen died and three homes were destroyed in an early morning fire in Cape Town s Driftsands.
While inspecting the scene, firefighters found the bodies of the two females, aged 26 and 17 and handed over the scene to the South African Police Service.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the fire at the Lloyd informal settlement was reported just before 02:00 on Thursday. When firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire on the corner of Symphony Way and Govan Mbeki [Road], they found several informal structures alight but managed to contain the blaze.

Two people, including a child, died after a fire engulfed their home in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, in the early hours of Saturday.
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said firefighters were informed of a shack fire in the Village Heights informal settlement at around 04:00. Fire crews were dispatched and, upon arrival, found the entire structure engulfed in flames. They were informed that two persons were unaccounted for. The subsequent search of the property led to the discovery of the bodies of a man and female minor, Carelse said.

Bulelwa Mili lost her three-year-old son when her shack burnt down. Mili was away at the time. Every Friday she leaves her house at 4:30am to go to Westgate to collect clothes and food donated by residents, which she then sells to support her children.
“When I came back my child’s lifeless body was lying there covered with a silver paper. That picture will remain in my mind forever,” said Mili.
Cape Town Fire: Now helicopters water bomb mountain slopes
Firefighters spent hours battling the latest Cape Town fire that flared up during the early hours of Monday on the slopes near Simon s Town.
Cape Town’s fire and rescue service has managed to get the fire in the Simons Town area under control and is currently monitoring the situation for any potential flare ups.
Carelse said ten fire engines and 50 fire fighters had desponded to the latest scene of the fire to battle the blazes, assisted by Table Mountain National Park and a crew from the South African Navy.
“Two Oryx helicopters were requested from Ysterplaat Air Force base to assist with water bombing. The choppers water bombed the area for about two hours and we started downscaling until after 1pm. We currently still have two fire engines at the scene to watch for any flare ups,” he said.
