Mixed reviews for Budget as businesses and agriculture sector wonder who will pay
Share
Cape Town - Western Cape businesses and agriculture are sceptical about the Budget, expressing concern about where the money to fund all the plans will come from while simultaneously praising it for no new tax hikes as farmers and those in tourism felt forsaken.
Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Janine Myburgh said: “The Budget was as expected. No shocks and no evidence of backbone in tackling the SOE and other elephants in the room.”
“Those in the private sector wryly noticed that the reason for no new taxes was the tax contribution of the mining sector, ironically an industry that some departments of State seem to have been intent on closing. Some mining houses have already taken the hint and left. Those who stayed came to our rescue.”

The APAC Chamber Awards 2020 celebrate individuals and chambers from around the Asia Pacific that made significant contributions to the improvement of their communities.

“I have written to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs, to implore her to consider and lobby for the lifting of the current curfew of 21:00 to 23:00,” said Vos in a statement.
“I have been inundated with calls and correspondence from desperate businesses in hospitality, manufacturing, retail and SMMEs across the business value chain, including the Cape Chamber of Commerce and the Federated Hospitality Association of SA (Fedhasa), who, after just managing to survive the first round of lockdowns, are now facing closure due to having to close their doors at 20:00.”
According to Vos, losing trading hours every night has pushed many businesses to the brink, with many not being able to retain customers, pay bills, or keep staff employed.
