Mandt announces run for Cabell County Commission

HUNTINGTON — Republican Del. John Mandt Jr. is seeking election to the Cabell County Commission. Mandt currently represents the 16th District, which includes parts of Cabell and Lincoln counties, in the West Virginia House of Delegates. Now, he sets his sights on holding local office. “We need new blood — that’s a fact — in our city and county government,” Mandt said. He first announced his candidacy Friday on the Tom Roten Morning Show and then on Facebook. He said he planned to submit the paperwork to run for commission on Monday. Mandt said he is announcing his candidacy now as West Virginia begins redistricting and to give potential candidates time to consider running for his seat.

Closing arguments in the legal challenge between local West Virginia governments and drug companies will take place in late July as both sides have rested in the trial. Attorneys representing drug distributors AmerisourceBergen Drug. Co., Cardinal Health Inc. and McKesson Crop. rested their defense on Monday. The city of Huntington and Cabell County Commission accuse the companies of fueling the opioid crisis by shipping millions of opioid pills between 2008 and 2014 which led to a rise in illegal drug use. The federal bench trial, which U.S. District Judge David Faber is presiding over, was expected to go through mid-August. Multiple individuals, including former state Health Officer Dr. Rahul Gupta, Huntington Fire Chief Jan Rader and Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, testified in court.
