A new study shows that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, selectively attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, the critical hormone that regulates our circulating blood-sugar levels. The loss of these pancreatic cells, known as beta cells, is the defining feature of type 1 diabetes, understood to be triggered when the body s immune system, for unknown reasons, launches an unprovoked attack on those cells. Chinese Communist Party spies infiltrating New Zealand's universities, lecturers suspect

There was someone I did not recognise in the room and that person was pointing a phone around and taking pictures of the slides, he said. Christchurch council boss Karleen Edwards moves to Palmerston North

“Karleen’s credentials in healthcare are second to none.” Edwards said she was looking forward to settling in to Palmerston North and a return to the field of health and disability. She had chosen not to re-apply for the top job in Christchurch after five years in what she described as a challenging role in rebuilding the council’s morale and finances. Mash Trust recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in providing supported accommodation, mental health, disability and addiction recovery services for more than 2000 people and their families each year. Edwards replaces David Robinson, who has taken up an appointment as chief executive of the Wellington Free Ambulance service.
