Unofficial results in for Special District Director Election

VALE — The first round of unofficial results for the 2021 Special District Director Election are in, with ballot boxes having closed at 8 p.m. Results, including voter percentage turnouts, remain unofficial until they are finalized by Malheur County Clerk Gayle Trotter on June 2.  “Majority will be complete by the time we go home tonight though,” she wrote in an email to the newspaper on Tuesday afternoon.  At 2:30 p.m., Trotter said 31% of ballots — 5,196 of the 17,053 registered voters had returned their ballots, and an update was not available this evening. Noteworthy highlights are that Malheur County Commissioners will have to meet three times per year to discuss “promoting Malheur County’s interest in moving the Oregon-Idaho border.” Preliminary results show 1,824 yes votes compared to 1,627 no votes.

Former ordinance officer speaks out on ordinance overhaul

ONTARIO Ontario City Council had many speakers during the public comments portion of its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night, with the majority speaking about fines regarding ordinance violations. It is noteworthy that one of those speakers was former Dallas Brockett, former Ontario Code Enforcement Officer. He started by saying he wanted to discuss code enforcement. “I know there’s been a little bit of talk about not refilling my position when I left,” said Brockett. He said that decision was made by Ontario Police Chief Steven Romero. Brockett went on to say he also wanted to discuss “undoing everything [he] worked so hard on to try to accomplish and make this city cleaner.”

Gazebo donation to cost Ontario an estimated $46K

ONTARIO The city of Ontario will be receiving a new gazebo in one of its parks soon according to Al Cablay, public works director with Jacobs, the city’s public works department. He noted in the corresponding staff report that an existing gazebo, currently located at 797 SW 12th Street, was a donation “made by a private party.” Cablay said that the city was approached by the homeowner in December of 2020 and since that time, city staff has been coordinating with the donor on relocating the structure. The report details how the structure has been inspected by city staff from both public works and community development.

Ontario voters may see charter changes on ballot

ONTARIO Did you know that when former Ontario City Councilor Dan Capron moved out of city limits, thereby resigning from his seat, he didn’t have to? The city of Ontario’s municipal charter states that in order to be elected, a person has to have lived within city limits for one year, but once a person is elected, they could theoretically move outside the city altogether and keep on serving. While that may not have been the original intent of the authors, the 8-page document still reads that way 36 years since its last update in 1985. This is among about 20 subsections that are proposed to be changed by a committee that has been reviewing the charter in recent months. For those areas they are seeking to update, the committee has considered what other cities, as well as what the League of Oregon Cities suggests.
