VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Friday morning, the Virginia Beach Sheriff s Office announced it would lower the hiring age for deputies to 18 years old.
A release from a spokesperson said the office had 38 vacancies for sworn positions on Feb. 26, and eased the qualifications as a way to fill those jobs.
Applicants used to have to be 20 to apply, and 21 by the time they finished basic training. We have some outstanding young people who deserve a chance to serve, wrote Sheriff Ken Stolle. They have served successfully in other departments and in the military and I believe they can be an asset to the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.
Under current Virginia laws, judges are required to impose at least a certain amount of jail or prison time on a host of crimes from guns to drugs to assaulting a police officer. That could change.

16 Virginia Beach Sheriff s Office employees, 59 inmates test positive for COVID-19

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Beach Sheriff s Office announced that 16 staff members and 59 inmates tested positive for COVID-19 following a mass testing event December 18.
According to the sheriff s office, 1,526 inmates, deputies, civilians and contractors were tested. The number of positive cases represents 3 percent of the sheriff s office s 500 staff members and approximately 5 percent of the jail s 1,090 inmates.
The sheriff s office said at the recommendation of the Virginia Department of Health, everyone will be tested again in the near future.
Of the inmates who tested positive, 54 are new positives and five had previously tested positive. All of the inmates have been notified by medical staff and placed in quarantine.
