The path to winning appointment to Long Island’s highly paid police forces has been more than three times tougher for Black would-be officers than for white applicants and twice as tough for Hispanic job seekers in recruitment by the Nassau and Suffolk County departments, a Newsday investigation has found.
With thousands more people seeking jobs than the number needed by the two forces, the investigation revealed that since 2012, each county’s hiring process rejected minorities at rates that exceeded a federally established benchmark used to detect evidence of unlawful discrimination.
Candidates for positions on the 2,400-member Nassau County Police Department and the 2,400-member Suffolk County Police Department compete on written exams and then undergo physical fitness tests, psychological screening, medical evaluations and background reviews.

At the one-quarter mark of the regular season, has there been a more chaotic division in baseball than the American League Central?
The Twins, who were universally predicted to contend for a third straight division title, have arguably been the sport s most disappointing team and enter Thursday with the fewest wins in baseball. The Royals surprised the baseball world by leading the division for much of April before suddenly cratering with 11 straight losses in early May.
Heck, even the White Sox, who unsurprisingly lead the division, are dealing with their own turmoil due to key injuries to their star players and manager Tony La Russa s constant presence in the headlines amid all of the recent controversy over Yermín Mercedes homer off Willians Astudillo.

CHICAGO â When YermÃn Mercedes became the first player in modern history to start a season with eight consecutive hits, we waited for the Chicago White Sox rookie to come back to earth.
And when he finished April being named the American League Rookie of the Month, we waited for the law of averages to kick in.
Sooner or later, the waiting is going to have to stop.
While Mercedes has come down from his .417 average in April, he still led the majors at .376 entering Thursdayâs 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins and had hit .333 since the record-breaking 8-for-8 start.
