Instead of serving a jail sentence, he stayed at home, his case deferred more than a year, as courts closed and jails nationwide dramatically reduced their populations to stop the spread of COVID-19. But the numbers have begun creeping up again as courts are back in session and the world begins returning to a modified version of normal. It’s worrying criminal justice reformers who argue that the past year proved there is no need to keep so many people locked up in the U.S.

Daily vaccinations slowing down

 Genesee County has enough vaccines to meet the demand, and officials are reporting that the number of daily vaccinations is slowing down.  Ashley Herbig, emergency preparedness coordinator at the Genesee County Health Department, said, “Vaccine distribution is experiencing a decrease in recipients at this time. A number of factors can contribute to the decline that is being experienced in other areas and not just specifically Genesee County.”  As of Thursday, May 6, 250,563 vaccines have been administered in Genesee County, with 146,881 first shots. Approximately 44 percent of eligible people have received one dose, and 31 percent are fully vaccinated.  Capt. Richard Cronkright from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said the number of people coming to vaccine clinics has been decreasing.
