Ribbon art binds memories of lost loved ones

LARGO — Uncle Joe was pushing 80 but still rocking out with a bar band in Indian Rocks Beach, his hometown. “He decided the shot wasn’t for him,” recalled his niece, who identified herself simply as Kim. “Then he got the virus and died.” The Largo woman, who attended a COVID victims memorial with her daughter, Sarah, on June 24, said she also lost a cousin in Indiana to the virus. The mother and daughter were among three dozen attendees at the opening reception for the COVID Ribbon Memorial, now on display in the courtyard of the Creative Pinellas headquarters in Largo.

Longboat Key resident helps sister with COVID-19 ribbon memorial | Longboat Key

Share Judy Tobias helped sister Cathy Tobias tie nearly 30,000 ribbons to represent every Floridian life lost to the pandemic. On Feb. 16, friends, community members and families spread out along a swath of beach more than two football fields long. As one, they raised thick lines of plastic ribbons tied in every color of the rainbow as onlookers snapped photos and the ribbons snapped in the wind. In total, there were nearly 30,000 ribbons, one for every Floridian death due to complications of COVID-19.  “When you see it in ribbons, it’s like, ‘Oh, my,’” Longboat Key resident and ribbon tier Judy Tobias said. “There are all these families who are missing someone at the table.”
