Bill to remove county commissioners from local boards of health not popular with commissioners

A Zoom meeting of the Routt County Board of Health held in November. The board consists of the three commissioners, but a new bill in the state legislature seeks to change that, instead having commissioners appoint members to the board. (File photo) STEAMBOAT SPRINGS The Routt County Board of Commissioners and Board of Health have the same three members, but a bill soon to be introduced in the Colorado Legislature seeks to change that. Rep. Cathy Kipp, a Democrat from Fort Collins, plans to introduce a bill she said will take politics out of county boards of health by removing commissioners from those boards. A 2008 law required counties to have an independent board of health but left a carve-out for commissioners from counties with populations less than 100,000 to double as the board of health.

Bill could make SAT or ACT optional for Colorado public colleges

Two Democratic state lawmakers want Colorado s public colleges to take a more holistic approach to admissions. Author: Rachel Leuthauser Updated: 10:22 PM MST January 25, 2021 COLORADO, USA Democratic state lawmakers plan to introduce a bill that would make standardized tests optional for Colorado public college admissions. We believe there are plenty of students out there who have great potential while they may not have great tests scores, said Senator Tammy Story (D-Jefferson County). They should have all the same opportunities to go forward with higher education if they choose. Sen. Story is one of the two Democratic state lawmakers behind the bill and the other is Representative Cathy Kipp, (D-Fort Collins).

Colorado legislation looks to make standardized tests optional for college admissions

Students would no longer be required to take the SAT or ACT when applying to Colorado’s public colleges under proposed legislation that aims to make higher education more accessible to low-income and first-generation college applicants who often don’t do as well on standardized tests. State Rep. Cathy Kipp and state Sen. Tammy Story, both Democrats, plan to introduce legislation when the chambers are back in session that would allow public colleges and universities to make the move to test-optional admissions. Students could still submit scores if they chose. Lawmakers made tests optional for 2021 high school graduates applying to Colorado schools. The coronavirus caused disruptions across the state in accessing the SAT, and state officials waived requirements that schools offer the test. The proposed legislation would make that change permanent.
