Tom Satre, who runs a charter service out of Juneau, was taking a group cruising on his 62-foot fishing boat when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam toward him and circled the boat in the icy waters. “We could tell right away the young bucks were distressed,” he said. Satre opened his back gate, “and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals on board. …. I’ve never seen anything like it!” Once on the boat, the exhausted deer collapsed, shivering. Satre dropped his unexpected passengers off at the small community of Taku Harbor, about 22 miles southeast of Juneau. The first hopped onto the boardwalk, “looked back as if to say ‘thank you,’ and disappeared” into the forest.
