Cash for koalas: NSW government considers paying farmers to preserve habitat

Advertisement Farmers would be paid by the NSW Government to preserve koala habitat on their properties under a proposal being formulated by senior ministers. The plan, which involves compensating farmers under the Biodiversity Conservation Trust, is being developed following the failure of the koala planning policy that split the coalition and threatened to plunge the NSW government into minority in September. Nationals leader John Barilaro said his party will be working to bring back a SEPP (State Environmental Planning Policy) to deal with koala habitat. To bring back a strategy that deals with doubling its population and protecting its habitat.

A bow for koalas | Echonetdaily

Alan Veacock, Cumbalum What an outstanding effort by Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack, to stand up to the premier and a belligerent National Party to thwart what would have been a death sentence for what remains of the koala population in NSW. Take a bow Catherine, you have done a great service for the koalas and your community that passionately support them. John (Pork) Barilaro and Clarence MP Chris Galaptus claiming ‘farmers deserve certainty’ is farcical. Do the koalas deserve extinction? One has only to watch great programs like Landline on our poorly funded ABC to see that a growing number of farmers are actually replanting koala trees on their property in an effort to reintroduce these iconic marsupials.

Nationals will field a candidate in Port Macquarie against sitting Liberal MP

“The people of Port Macquarie deserve to make this choice.” Earlier Barilaro told radio station 2GB that Williams’ decision to join the Liberals should be tested at an election. “You were elected as a National party member – our party has represented that seat for the past 10 years,” he said. “The investment that we have seen go into Port Macquarie is because of the National party fighting at the cabinet table and it’s unfair on that community, on our membership, our base.” The NSW Nationals leader said local party members had proposed running a candidate in 2023 and the party’s base had a right to be angry at Williams’ defection.
