Datebook: Artist s New Work Melds Science With Art At University Galleries

Kendra Paitz / University Galleries A Chicago-based artist ventured into the wild to gather inspiration for her latest exhibition. Plumbing the depths of lakes around the world, brainstorming with scientists and shadowing the footsteps of a renowned naturalist, she merged arts with science in an exploration of a fragile environment.  “The Canary in the Lake” features 40 new photographic, video and audio works by Alice Hargrave. The exhibition is currently on view at University Galleries in Normal. Hargrave centers her new work on lakes and birds as she continues her foray into biodiversity and habitat, and the losses occurring in nature from climate change.

Great Lakes Ice Coverage is Shrinking

KEY CONCEPTS While there is significant year-to-year variability in ice coverage, trends show that annual maximum ice coverage on each of the Great Lakes has declined over time. Across all the Great Lakes, the annual maximum ice cover is, on average, 22% lower than it was a half-century ago. Furthermore, ice coverage is becoming less reliable, with more frequent years of extremely low ice coverage (like this year). The decline in lake ice coverage is driven by warming air and water temperatures due to climate change. The lake ice season is also contracting in many cases, with lakes now tending to freeze over later and thaw out sooner.

Wicklow South: Young professionals swap Dublin docklands for A-rated homes with large gardens

How much is your House worth in 2021? While home values in South Wicklow have risen by an average of 8pc on this time last year, that rate of increase is expected to level off to a more modest 3pc. The fact that more family buyers are looking at South Wicklow now than ever before has seen the price of both three and four-bed semi-detached houses in town recording big increases of 14pc and 15pc from €262,000 to €300,000 for three-beds and from €297,000 to €340,000 for four-beds. During the first half of 2020, it looked like there would be a shortage of stock, with more buyers than houses pushing up prices and leading to competitive bidding.
