The £60M Brexit barrier on the M20 in Kent will be removed this weekend, four months after its installation by Balfour Beatty.
The “movable barrier technology” introduced concrete blocks to the northern side of the highway, used to create a contraflow system to counter congestion.
Once removed, the barrier will sit along the M20 should the contraflow could be re-activated in future for any future cross-channel disruption. It has been in place on a 24km section of the M20 between junctions 8 (for Maidstone) and 9 (at Ashford).
The total cost of the barrier was £60M with £21.3M spent on procuring the quickchange movable barriers and barrier transfer machines and other material costs such as the purchase of the barrier’s concrete blocks.
