Noem, anti-marijuana allies fail to block medical marijuana in South Dakota
Medical marijuana is back on track to be legal in South Dakota this summer.
The fate of Initiated Measure 26, passed by voters in November, was in question in recent weeks. But the South Dakota Senate won a high-stakes game of chicken this week over medical marijuana after a standoff with House Republicans and Gov. Kristi Noem.
Noem s administration had sought to delay the implementation of IM 26 and a bill that would have done that had already sailed through the House.
But the Senate amended the bill in the final days of the Legislative session, including decriminalizing small amounts of recreational marijuana. And when the two chambers refused to a compromise Wednesday, House Bill 1100 died. Its demise means that IM 26 will go into effect as it appeared on the ballot.
