Former State Rep. Froy Salinas, who broke barriers as first Hispanic lawmaker from Lubbock, has died
He was 81 when he died Tuesday in the Austin area.
The Lynn County native served four terms representing Lubbock-based State House District 83 in the Texas Legislature from 1977 through 1985, according to Avalanche-Journal archives.
Former Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, who Salinas himself described as a political ally as the two served in the Legislature together, released a brief statement on social media late Wednesday, praising Salinas. He was a good man who loved his family, God & country, Hance wrote. He worked hard for TTU & Lubbock. I was proud to call him a friend. He had a great sense of humor.
Texas Tech Chancellor Emeritus Kent Hance released his new podcast, âThe Best Storyteller in Texas.â The podcast consists of the many stories Hance has to share from his experiences as a U.S. Congressman, lawyer, professor and being elected to the Texas Railroad Commission.Â
Hance started his education at Tech and graduated in 1965 with a bachelorâs degree in business administration.Â
âI loved every minute of my four years of undergrad,â Hance said. âIt was a great experience.âÂ
As a first-generation college student, Hance said he values the education he received at Tech. He had many professors who inspired him and made lifelong friends while attending the university.
