The Gaston Gazette
The need for a new bridge spanning the Catawba River and connecting southeastern Gaston County to Mecklenburg County has been talked about for decades.
Best case scenario?
At least another decade will pass before the first vehicle drives across such a bridge. We re still looking at 10 to 15 years, Randi Gates, administrator of the Gaston-Cleveland-Lincoln Metropolitan Planning Organization, told a virtual forum hosted Thursday by the Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce. It will be at least 2030 to 2034 before we see dirt moving, she added.
The only possible factor that could speed up that timeline is an infusion of federal transportation funds to the project, a prospect clouded by the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession that has accompanied it.
