Electronics manufacturers are increasingly producing software and products that address hearing loss. Smartphone apps, earbuds, and soundbars help people understand real-time, in-person conversations, phone calls, and streaming media. It s remarkable that so many more tech companies are even thinking about people with hearing loss, says Joe Montano, a New York City audiologist and professor at Cornell University s Weill Medical College.
Montano was pleasantly surprised to learn that big box retailer BJ s is now selling a dialogue clarifying soundbar that makes it easier for people with hearing loss to understand movies and TV shows by reducing the prominence of music and sound effects in the soundtrack.

Audio equipment maker Bose is wading into the world of hearing loss with the launch of its FDA-cleared SoundControl hearing aids.
The hearing aids were developed for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss and are available direct-to-consumer without a prescription.
When paired with the connected Bose Hear app, users can fit, program and control their SoundControl hearing aids directly from their smartphones.
The app has fine-tuning settings for amplifying quiet sounds, modifying vocal frequencies and focusing on nearby or ambient sounds. Users can also name different audio settings for frequent activities and store them in the Bose Hear app under the Modes feature.
