Valley mourns boxing champ Hagler, dead at 66

CONWAY — Retired middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler, who died last Saturday at his Bartlett home at age 66, was remembered as one of the valley’s own after the famous boxer first started coming here in the early 1980s, then bought a home in Bartlett in 1985. “As far as I’m concerned, he was the valley’s celebrity,” is how Terry O’Brien, co-owner of the Red Parka Steakhouse and Pub in Glen, summed up Hagler. Bartlett Police Chief Christopher Keaton said police logs show that Hagler was transported by Bartlett-Jackson Ambulance Services from his home near Attitash to North Conway’s Memorial Hospital on Friday evening.

A classic Johnson City barbecue survives and thrives

2020 was not an easy year for a lot of local businesses, especially restaurants that depend on having customers within their walls. Though this can be partially mitigated by using a well-run carryout business, a restaurant offering dine-in service was hobbled by social-distancing requirements requiring it to operate at reduced capacity, and therefore reduced profits. From memory, I can still make Red Pig’s signa

RONDA RICH: When we come together

My cousin, Lynn, and I sat side by side every week in Sunday School, in the choir where less than a dozen people sang, and on the second bench on the left side for preaching. We even led a song together every Sunday and, sometimes, if the church was really hard up, one or both of us would play the piano. Neither of us was very good at it, but Daddy, willing to lead the suffering congregation through our sour notes, thought it was worth the learning we’d get from it. I remember, once, when I was about 14, I stopped midway through the first verse of Trust and Obey and said to Royce, the song leader, “You’re singin’ too fast. Slow down.”
