STATEHOUSE ROUNDUP: Riding shotgun
Recap and analysis of the week in state government
Kids, grandkids, neighbors. Strangers online. Suddenly everyone this week was craving a little quality time with the older and wiser among us, looking to get out of the house and go for a drive . maybe to Gillette Stadium, or the Eastfield Mall.
The sudden popularity of the so-called Silent Generation had to do with Gov. Charlie Baker s new policy on vaccinating the 75-and-older cohort. Beginning Thursday, Baker said that anyone who accompanied an eligible senior citizen to a state-run vaccination site could get the shot as well, regardless of their age or health.
BROCKTON When Claire Cronin ran to represent the 11th Plymouth District in 2012, it was her first time seeking public office.
Less than a decade later, she has had other firsts as a state representative becoming the first woman to chair the Joint Judiciary Committee and now becoming the first woman to serve as majority leader, the second highest position in House leadership. I have appreciated that I have been given a lot of responsibility during my time in the legislature where I have had the ability to work on issues that are important to me and my district, Cronin said. I always appreciate that I have been put into positions that have given me the opportunity to build up a legislative record.

BOSTON House Speaker Ron Mariano named his senior leadership team Thursday, Feb. 11, assembling a group that includes four women and one member of color to help shape the agenda for the House as Democrats look to focus, in part, on the state s COVID-19 and vaccination response.
Among the new leadership team is Rep. Sarah Peake, D-Provincetown, who represents the Fourth Barnstable District, consisting of Brewster s Precinct 3, Chatham, Eastham, Harwich, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet. Peake was a member of the Provincetown Select Board from 2002 to 2007. She was elected to the House in 2007.
House Speaker Mariano, who succeeded former Speaker Robert DeLeo in December, has tapped Easton Rep. Claire Cronin for the number two slot in Democratic leadership as majority leader, a position Mariano held himself under DeLeo.
