Warning: Proposals would have devastating impact on Scotland s red meat supply chain

By Neale McQuistin The Scottish Red Meat Resilience Group has responded in strong opposition to the recommendations in both the DEFRA and Scottish Government consultations on Welfare of Animals at Transport, which closes for submissions this week. According to the group, if implemented, the proposals contained within the consultations would have a devastating impact on Scotland’s red meat supply chain. The cross-industry group, which aims to seek out ways to protect, promote and develop the industry, was established in 2019. Chaired by Quality Meat Scotland’s chair Kate Rowell, the group consists of representatives from across the supply chain including the Scottish Beef Association, NFU Scotland, National Sheep Association Scotland, Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs, Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers, Pig Industry Leadership Group, Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association, and The Institute of Auctioneers & Appraisers in Scotland.

Industry fights for live exports | The Scottish Farmer

LIVESTOCK transport over sea is vital for Scotland s island communities A BAN on live exports for fattening and slaughter would be ‘catastrophic’ for Scotland’s red meat supply chain and poses a threat to Scottish island communities. Scotland’s farming bodies have sent a clear message to the UK Government that they must fully consider the impact a ban could have on UK farm businesses - outlining the need for a single standard to allow for seamless cross-border journeys. Defra’s consultation on the ‘Welfare of Animals at Transport’ which seeks to strengthen rules regarding animal welfare in transit post-Brexit, has been extended to February 25. Last week, an investigation was launched by the House of Commons Efra Select Committee into how new rules following Brexit will impact on animal welfare, disease control and industry interests.
