Watch now: These Decatur women find hope in Vice President Kamala Harris

DECATUR — MacArthur High School senior Olivia Tate, 18, wants to be a surgeon, a field that historically has been dominated by men. She’s not deterred. “If I became a nurse or if I became anything else, every day I would wish I became a surgeon,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see a woman of color in a place of power,” said Tate, who voted in the November election. “She is someone that resembles me. It’s truly inspiring to people, women in general, especially at a young age.” The swearing in of Harris, 56, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent, marked a historic moment Wednesday for America, a feat that shattered one of the most male-dominated circles in our country.

A new sculpture by Sorawit Songsataya features a dead moa installed in the Christchurch Arts Centre. A dead moa lies among the historic buildings in the Christchurch Arts Centre, surrounded by native birds looking on in mourning. An emotional and colourful new sculpture by Wellington artist Sorawit Songsataya has been installed in the centre as part of the ongoing Scape Public Art festival, which began in October. The sculpture, called The Interior, features a life-size blue moa on the ground by Market Square in the Arts Centre as other birds peer on sadly from their perches on nearby railings. Supplied
