In particular, the couple s complicated legal situation has provided her with numerous challenges as the absence of a power of attorney means she cannot access Derek s bank/credit card accounts, nor their joint savings account. Derek was first diagnosed with coronavirus back in March last year before being hospitalised.
Although Kate’s husband of 16 years no longer has Covid-19 and has emerged from a deep coma, he is currently thought to be in a minimal state of consciousness, as the virus left holes in both his heart and lungs.
A documentary following Kate and her family’s struggle over the past year is set to air on ITV towards the end of the month.
Kate has also reflected on what it was like during the early months of when Derek was first admitted to hospital, in an interview with The Sunday Times.

The favourite GMB duo were discussing the nationwide opening of schools on March 8.
After being informed by her co-host that today was the last day of homeschooling, Kate acknowledged the hotly-anticipated event by revealing how teaching at home was going in her house.
She said: There’s a lot of people very excited about that - apart from my kids who are basically not being schooled by me!

We re back into a situation of looking at strangers in masks, she said on the morning show. That s the situation for everybody at the moment. It s tough. When you re someone like him, dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can t help but fear it s not helpful. There s no end in sight to that. There s no one to blame or be angry with. It s tough.
