This Is Us fifth season ended with a wedding, just not the one you thought.
On Tuesday s season closer, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) prepared for their wedding day in the Adirondacks. But as the big moment approached, Madison was the one who pumped the brakes on saying I do, because she couldn t marry someone who didn t love her fully. While the revelation devastated Kevin, he seemed to accept the reality of their broken engagement after all, they didn t have the most romantic of courtships.
Plus, Rebecca gets a chance to impart some motherly words of wisdom and Kate second-guesses her brother s relationship.
âI think one of the things I liked about this finale is the execution,â Fogelman says. âDespite two reveals of marriages, not quite working out there, when you cut to that period in the future, everyone feels good.â And itâs true, every Pearson wears a smile in the brief scene, even Madison who is helping prep the bride.
And expect to see a lot more of Phillip as Fogelman teases, âChris is going to be a big part of the show next year.â For fans who might feel blind-sided, the creator promises this was always part of Kateâs story. âItâs been part of our plan all along.â

In an Instagram stories video, the new mom, still in her show make up, breastfeeds her newborn son. She joked that she hopes her older appearance won’t traumatize her baby boy. “That’s a wrap on season 5 and now I’m just feeding my child. I hope he’s not going to need therapy for this later,” she quipped.
