Silent sea: UC Santa Barbara scientist locates thousands of DDT-filled barrels in Catalina Channel

Reports in old ship logs of thousands of barrels of DDT being dumped into the Catalina Channel during the 1950s were confirmed in 2011 by photographs taken by UC Santa Barbara marine scientist Dr. David Valentine by Donald Morrison Peninsula residents have grown up seeing “Do Not Eat Contaminated Fish” signs at local piers and beaches. The signs warn against catching and eating White Croaker, Black Croaker, Barred Sand Bass, Topsmelt and Barracuda. 

Woman killed in Carlsbad murder-suicide was veterinarian, endurance athlete

CARLSBAD    A Carlsbad woman killed in a suspected murder-suicide last week was an accomplished triathlete who once competed in the fabled Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, according to authorities and friends. Mary Knott, 44, was a veterinarian and “devoted animal mom,” according to her friend and coach, Hillary Biscay. (Photo courtesy of Hillary Biscay) Mary Knott, 44, was also a veterinarian and “incredible human,” according to her friend and triathlon coach, Hillary Biscay, who said Knott had also competed in two grueling Ultraman races and was training for three marathon swims she had planned for this year. “She was a daughter, sister, aunt, devoted animal mom, and a veterinarian,” Biscay wrote in an email Friday night. “She had many gifts and she shared them generously.”
