Gadget Daddy: A chess-teaching rat gets an update for modern times

Nearly 20 years ago, I wrote about a chess-teaching program aimed at children ages 8 and up. It used various arcade-like games to teach kids how chess pieces moved and captured. It was a new concept in learning chess for beginners.
The program originally appeared in 2003 and was sold on a CD-ROM under the title of Learn to Play Chess with Fritz and Chesster. Children s Technology Review wrote about it when it first appeared, saying, clever review of the chess pieces and moves, and concluded with: This is the best children s chess program on the market.

The math is pretty straightforward.
In normal times, there are about one million boys playing football in high school. Of those, approximately 73,000 become NCAA college football players. From that group only about 250 young men get drafted into the NFL annually, which has precisely 1,696 players on the active roster at any given time less than half of whom are starters.
Thus for the high school football player fantasizing eventual NFL stardom, he has less than a one-fifth of one percent chance of even making a team, much less achieving lasting fame which is yet another reason why it’s prudent to pay attention in math, science and English classes.
Gadget Daddy: First all-digital CES seemed a shadow of its former self

CES is what it is known as now. What it used to be was the Consumer Electronics Show. It was referred to for so long in its abbreviated form (it s been around for 54 years) that that s what it became.
Only there never have been normal, everyday consumers there. Attendees are manufacturers, or distributors, or vendors involved with the electronics industry, or the people who normally report on the industry. Still, even that narrow band brought a record 184,300 attendees in 2017.
That number dropped to 182,200 in 2018, which, CES officials said, was in line with our strategy of managing attendee numbers and attracting the most highly qualified attendees. This strategy is aimed at helping limit hotel price increases and the pressure on travel to and around Las Vegas during CES.
