Major works to transform the “gateway” into Southend High Street are taking shape, with bosses hoping it will encourage shoppers back following Covid-19. The majority of upgrades for London Road have now been completed, including changes to pavements, green roof bike storage, and an efficient sustainable urban drainage system put in place. Remaining work on this section include a new paved area and benches, new trees, bespoke lighting and an improved bollard system. Despite delays, council bosses are delighted with progress so far. Kevin Robinson, councillor for business, culture and tourism, admitted the project “will not solve all the challenges”, but it is hoped it could be a catalyst for growth.

New restrictions threaten some US food shipments to commissaries, exchanges in Europe February 26 New European Union restrictions could hinder some products from reaching the shelves at European exchanges and commissisaries, like this one in Ramstein, Germany. (Defense Commissary Agency) Military families in Europe may see shortages of items ranging from baby formula to pet food on their military stores’ shelves due to newly enforced European Union restrictions on food imports to military bases.
Commissary and exchange officials say they are monitoring shipments. There have been no impacts on shelves yet, and the distribution centers in Europe keep a 30- to 45-day supply of these items to support their stores. The issue, which just arose in the past week, is caused by newly enforced restrictions imposed by the European Union, industry sources said.

Spencer, IA (KICD) The Spencer city council met in workshop session Monday night in an ongoing effort to arrive at a consensus on property taxes for the upcoming year.
The three-member budget committee advocated a property tax increase from 12 dollars 53 cents per thousand dollars assessed valuation, to 12 dollars 70 cents.
Under a new state law the city council must approve a maximum levy rate each year, and that 12 – 70 figure is on the agenda for next Monday night’s regular meeting.
Councilman Ron Hanson said he’ll vote for that maximum amount next week, but vote to keep the actual levy where it is when the budget comes up for approval.
