But, Brewer noted, the office is always planning for ways to keep the community safe.
Local law enforcement clashed with protesters in the summer of 2020, when nightly protests were held at Wilmington City Hall for three months following the police killing of George Floyd.
The events lead to a curfew being put into effect in the city. Police wore riot gear, issued citations and deployed tear gas during some of the more contentious nights, though largely the protests were peaceful.
And while officers and deputies had trained and prepared for the protest in the summer, real life situations always have injections that you may or may not have thought of, Brewer said.
