Kewanee Police: Criminal charges not likely in Walmart fatal accident, state s attorney reviewing
Star Courier
The Kewanee Police has forwarded incident information from last week s fatal accident in the Wal-Mart parking to the Henry County State s Attorney s office, though criminal charges are not expected.
Police Chief Nicholas Welgat said Wednesday that police had kept details of the incident internal until the investigation was completed.
He said the department determined that the man driving the vehicle that struck the 80-year-old woman, though he was cited for driving without a valid license, did not bear criminal liability.
He said the investigation had shown that the driver of the vehicle was distracting by watching other vehicles enter and exit the parking area and did not see the woman when he pulled out and his vehicle struck her. The victim was transported to OSF Saint Luke s Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
