Monster nevertheless further establishes the New Orleans-born actor as one of the most exciting actors of his generation.
Ahead of the movie’s release on Netflix this May, Harrison Jr. spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about his Five Favorite Films. Despite coming up with them on the spot, his collection of women-led stories feel like a cohesive canon that reveals what thrills the young actor the most, namely the chance to watch performers at the top of their game expertly bringing to life complicated characters caught between who they are and who they wished they could be.

I just love the visuals. I think Tilda [Swinton]’s performance is so sick. It’s insane. The choices she makes are so great. There’s something about seeing her internalize her situation and her relationship with her son, and kind of take the brunt of her not knowing how to love a child the way she thought she would, that motherly instinct she thought she had not kicking in, and how that affected the child.

In January 2018, a film called “Monster” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
It was well received. A young actor named Kelvin Harrison Jr. played a Harlem high school student arrested for murder. Another relative unknown, John David Washington, made a big impression in the small role of a bad dude. Surely this movie was going places.
Three years later, it’s finally here. It had a brief name change, to “All Rise,” and a short distribution deal with Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures, before arriving at Netflix.
Monster Interview: Kelvin Harrison Jr. Discusses Playing Steve Harmon
ComingSoon.net Managing Editor Tyler Treese caught up with
Monster star Kelvin Harrison Jr. to discuss the court drama, which is out May 7 on Netflix. Based upon the novel by Walter Dean Myers of the same name, it follows the trial of Steve Harmon, a model youth played by Harrison Jr., that gets accused of participating in an armed robbery that left a convenience owner dead.
Tyler Treese:
The original novel Monster is such an important piece of young adult fiction, and it deals with some really important subject matter such as race issues, the legal system, and discrimination. Can you speak to what it means personally to star in a film that tackles these matters with such care and nuance?
